OSCARS 2013 Nominations

The 2013 Academy Awards nominees were announced way back in January, with favourites Zero Dark ThirtyLincoln and Silver Linings Playbookearning top nominations, while Ben Affleck’s Argo, widely touted as one of this year’s best films, failed to place in many major categories.
Lincoln, from director Steven Spielberg, leads the race with 12 nominations, including best picture, best director and best actor in a leading role for Daniel Day Lewis. Close behind is Life of Pi, which earned 11 nominations. Michael Haneke’s foreign-language film Amour earned five nominations.

Among this year’s snubs was the best director category’s omission of Kathryn Bigelow for Zero Dark Thirty and Ben Afflek for Argo. Both directors have been widely celebrated for their respected films — Bigelow’s previous effort, The Hurt Locker, earned her the best diretor Oscar in 2009.
A notable milestone from this year’s crop of nominees is its best leading actress category, which this year contains the oldest and youngest actresses to ever be nominated for the honour: Quvenzhané Wallis, aged nine, is up for her work in Beasts of the Southern Wild, while Emmanuelle Riva, 85, is up for her role in Amour.
